About Me

I am Ash Wong (he/they), currently a student at Manchester Metropolitan University, studying for a Master of Arts in Filmmaking.

Since I was little, I was blessed with a strong passion for creation and storytelling. It once manifested in the form of visual art and comics, then in novels and short stories. Eventually, in secondary school, I came to the epiphany that the audio-visual medium of film, the creation of an immersive and emotional experience, was the perfect conduit for all the stories I yearned to tell. I began to write screenplays and made my first film with my friends as a passion project, a production that lasted almost 3 years. All of this paved my way for a future in film.

So here I am, writing and directing, and allowed free range to explore what films mean to me specifically. On this journey of learning and exploration, to me, film also became an inquisition into what really matters to humanity, about re-examining the stuff that makes us who we are. It pushes us to interrogate every construct and every idea, past, present and future. Except, it is often not just an intellectual interrogation, but one that is intrinsically empathetic and experiential. In other words, film is important, to who we are and where we are headed. Thus, Disrupture Films was born, born from my wish to pierce through conventions and beliefs, to subvert the form with deeply personal stories. This wish has characterised every one of my work since then.
